Media Upload Issues

Resolve problems with uploading images and videos to your posts.

Media Upload Issues

If you’re having trouble uploading images or videos when composing a post, here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

Check File Size

Each social platform enforces its own file size limits. If your upload fails, the file may exceed the allowed size:

  • Images — Generally up to 10 MB for most platforms, though limits can vary.
  • Videos — Limits range from 50 MB to several GB depending on the platform and content type (post, story, reel).

Fix: Compress or resize your media before uploading. Use an image optimizer for photos or a video compression tool to reduce file size.

Verify the File Format

SoSocial supports the most common media formats:

  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP
  • Videos: MP4, MOV

If you’re trying to upload an unsupported format (e.g., TIFF, BMP, AVI, MKV), convert it to a supported format first.

Fix: Use a free online converter or image editing tool to save your file in a supported format.

Check Your Internet Connection

Large media files require a stable internet connection to upload successfully. A slow or intermittent connection can cause uploads to time out or fail partway through.

Fix: Try uploading on a more stable connection, or upload a smaller file to test whether the connection is the issue.

URL-Based Media

When using media from a URL (e.g., importing an image by link), the source must be:

  • Publicly accessible — The URL cannot require authentication, login, or special headers.
  • Direct link to the file — The URL should point directly to an image or video file, not a webpage that contains the media.
  • Available — Temporary or expiring URLs may fail if they expire before the post is published.

Fix: Download the file locally first, then upload it directly through the composer.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Try a different file — Upload a known-good image (small JPG) to confirm the upload system is working.
  2. Check the file extension — Make sure the extension matches the actual file format (e.g., a PNG renamed to .jpg may cause issues).
  3. Clear browser cache — Occasionally, browser caching can interfere with uploads.
  4. Try a different browser — Rule out browser-specific issues by testing in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

Still Having Issues?

If uploads continue to fail after trying these steps, check the Logs page for server-side error details. You can also create a support ticket from Account > Support with information about the file type, size, and the error message you’re seeing.
